Re: Before it is too late, by citizen Ambrose

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN.
His Excellency,
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR.
Asokoro,FCT, Abuja.
RE: BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE (The Reply)
Dear President,
I wish to air my opinion on the controversial letter written to you by the former president, His Excellency,
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, issues raised in the said letter and in your reply.
I will make this letter as brief as possible, unlike the leghthy open letters.
I am pleased to inform you that I am happy and elated by your response which many Nigerians had waited patiently for. We were glad you were able to put the records straight.
There were many issues raised in the exchange between you and former president Obasanjo, but I will dwell on the accusation of fighting corruption and terrorism.
Your excellency sir, my opinion, your administration’s fight against corruption will not get the desired results if the likes of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, among others are still allowed to play active politics in Nigeria.
Also, your goverment’s fight against terrorism will be a mirage if the likes of Gen. Muhamadu Buhari (Rtd), Lai Muhammed and others still go about their normal activities unchallenged. These are fellows who had threatened that Nigeria will be ungovernnable if they should lose the 2011 election. After the election, practically everything they had threatened came to pass.
Until the two mentioned issues are resolved, the good people of Nigeria will not be happy with you and your government. In addition, the souls of the people killed during the 2011 post election violence will never rest because they crave for justice – which is quizzing Buhari for his inflammatory statements.
Yours sincerely,
Nwaogwugwu Ambrose.

Majority of the Academic activities yet to resume-UNICAL

Academic activities are yet to resume at the University of Calabar, three weeks after the suspension of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
A check at the university campus by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Calabar showed that lectures had yet to  begin in almost all the departments and faculties.
Some of the students, who were seen at the campus, attributed the poor turn-out of students and delay in the resumption of lectures to the Christmas and New Year holidays.
A final year student in the Department of Economics, Mr Philip Tawo, said “we were supposed to start lectures on January 6, but some lecturers are yet to show up and so many students who travelled for the Christmas holiday have not returned’’.
Mrs Joy Emeka, a second year student of Law Faculty who was seen sitting at the lecture hall, said that she was supposed to have a lecture at 8 a.m, but the lecturer did not show up.
“ASUU suspended its strike in December, and since then we have not had lectures; though the timetable is out, full academic activities would commence next week,’’ she said.
Commenting on the situation, a lecturer at the Department of Marketing, Mr Patrick Mbum, said that the new academic calendar for the second semester 2012/2013 had been released.
Mbum added that serious teaching and learning would begin next week.
According to him, many students will resume next week as some of them are still waiting for their parents to settle them financially.
NAN also observed that economic activities within the vicinity of the university were gradually picking up. (NAN)

Why The Church Is Called Deeper Life PLUS The Real Meaning Of My Name & Why I Changed It – Pastor W.F Kumuyi

The founder and the General Overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Dr W.F Kumuyi in an interview with Elife talks about his Christian Faith, why his church was named Deeper Life and the real meaning of his name.

kumuyi
Pastor Ikumuyiwa
Pastor Kumuyi narrated why he changed his original name Ikumuyiwa meaning “death brought this” to Kumuyi.
Excerpts:
African names have meanings. What does Kumuyi mean?
The full name is Ikumuyiwa, which means ‘death brought this”. After I became a Christian, I realised it was the death of Christ that has brought us salvation, and also the redemption and reconciliation we have with God. So, for me, the name, Ikumuyiwa, is very significant – death has brought something good. The death of Christ has brought us the grace and goodness of God, and the relationship we have now with the Lord.
How many siblings do you have?
I have two siblings – a sister who is three years younger than I am, and a brother who is far much younger, 18 or 19 years younger than I am. Both of them are in Nigeria . My sister lives in Ondo State . A born-again Christian, she attends Deeper Life. My brother lives in Osun State, and he is also in the Church. Both of them are following the Lord.
You left the Anglican Church for the Apostolic Church. What made you switch?
I was teaching in Mayflower School, my alma mater. I completed my secondary school education in 1961, and started teaching mathematics at Mayflower in 1962. It was there that I was introduced to the Apostolic Faith, not Apostolic Church, and really heard about the change that Christ could make to our lives when we turned from our sins and believed in him and how he died for us on the cross of Calvary. It was there that I had the salvation experience and things really turned up for me.
You became a born-again Christian at the age of 23, on 5th April 1964. Do you still remember what happened?
Yes, a preacher was preaching a simple message, and because I had become almost like a moralist in the sense that I protected my name and personality, when that preacher preached, I saw that it was not just our actions that made us unacceptable to God, even our wrong thoughts and wrong plans or planning our lives as if God didn’t exist, also made us unacceptable. I then realised that I needed God. And when the preacher made an altar call, he pointedly said if “anybody needed Christ to fill the void in their lives, such people should come forward”, I felt drawn to what he was saying. I went forward, knelt down and prayed.
In fact, it was such an important day for me that I still remember it to this day, even where I knelt, how it all happened, and the peace and joy that came to my heart, that now I was reconciled with God through Jesus Christ. It was very definite.
Was it in Lagos ?
No, it was in Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State , about one-and-a half hours drive from Lagos.
Why did you call it Deeper Life?
Actually it came from the people. When they received the articles, they came to the Bible studies and said: “We’ve been Christians before, but this one is deeper than what we used to know.” So they used the name Deeper Life. We also knew that we were leading them to deeper relations with God; that is how those articles became Deeper Christian Life Articles. Then as we continued with the Bible studies, the group became known as the Deeper Christian Life Ministry. And when it became a Church in 1983, we called it the Deeper Life Bible Church.
Are you saying the name, Deeper Life, didn’t come from you?
Well, yes and no. We called the articles we sent out “Deeper Life Articles”. The people themselves were saying those articles were deepening their Christian lives. So the name came from both sides.

Pastor Kumuyi Does Not Recognize ‘Prophetess’ Who Visited Heaven, Hell and Came Back

linda-ngaujah_350x336
sister Linda
The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has refused to recognise the controversial videos of a ‘prophetess’ and others who claimed to have died, gone to heaven and came back to narrate their extra-terrestrial experience.
In the controversial videos being sold all over Nigeria, two women and a boy claimed they died, went to heaven and came back to narrate what they said God showed them.
One of such CDs is that of a Sierra Leonean woman, simply called Sister Linda Ngaujah. Linda said she died and was shown happenings in heaven and hell and that many of the members of a large church on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway are on their way to hell and that the founder of a leading church in Lagos should repent as he allegedly acquired his powers from the devil, saying that a Bishop of another large congregation and his members are not even recognised in heaven.
The ‘prophetess’ added that women who used rubber and wool to plait their hair will go to hell as it is a sin and that the only way for people to be prepared for heaven is to go back to the old Deeper Life Bible Church’s method of dressing.
The video CDs released by Linda is causing serious controversy in the church of God as some women in Deeper Life, who plait rubber hair have vowed never to do so again as they want to get to heaven.
Some female worshippers have even shaved their hair in one Christian Assembly in Ikorodu, saying that they don’t want to have anything to do with attachment as they want to get to heaven.
Another person who claimed to have gone to heaven said she saw the late wife of Kumuyi, Biodun, in heaven and narrated her encounter there.
Other CDs were released by Margaret Amure from Church of God Mission, who also claimed to have gone to heaven and another 10-year old boy from Edo, named Samuel.
P.M.NEWS Nigeria reports that on Sunday during the church service, Pastor Kumuyi reacted to this development warned members of his church not to have anything to do with such CDs as these are the last days where many people would come up with different things to deceive the church of God.
Pastor Kumuyi urged members of the church not to waste their money on such CDs, saying that the church should not rely on purported CDs of people who claimed to have gone to heaven to come back to produce CDs to sell to people narrating their encounter.
He referred to Linda’s CD which said people need to dress like Deeper Life to get to heaven, saying that “if you dress like Deeper Life without salvation and sanctification, will you get to heaven? These are the last days.”
The man of God emphasized that dressing like Deeper Life would not take anybody to heaven but that righteousness and holiness of heart are the keys to getting to the kingdom of God and warned members to desist from watching such CDs.
Pastor Kumuyi further said that one of the people who claimed to have gone to heaven said they saw Mummy Kumuyi in the kingdom of God, saying that he did not need such CD to know that his wife was in heaven and that the word of God has told us the criteria for getting to His kingdom.
According to him, such people were merely deceiving the people, saying that when Apostle Paul was translated to heaven and came back, he did not produce CDs about what he saw in heaven and began to sell them.
“When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Lazarus did not go about telling people that this was what he saw in heaven. We should rest on the word of God to tell us what we need to know about heaven and how to get there. How do you know that they have actually gone to heaven? These are the last days. Don’t waste your money on buying these CDs,” he stated.

Amaechi had presented a proposal to spend N485.5 billion to the Rivers State House of Assembly on Jan 7, which was approved the same day.
The governor, while signing the bill into law, said that completion of ongoing projects in the state would be the main focus of the budget.
He said that his administration embarked on various projects in health, education, roads, transport, power, water, agriculture sectors and other critical infrastructure.
Amaechi commended the state lawmakers for their prompt passage of the bill which, he said, would enhance sustained provision of people-oriented projects in the state.

JAMB made a promised, to create more CBT centres in Lagos

Alhaji Kamaldeen Oladeji, an official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Wednesday said that the examination body would create more Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in Lagos.
Oladeji, the Coordinator, JAMB National Headquarters Annex, Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the centres would be ready ahead of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
He said that the examination was scheduled for April and May and JAMB anticipated that about 75 per cent of the candidates would register on the computer-based platform.
“Currently we are planning to use institutions like the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, the Lagos State Polytechnic and the Lagos State University.
“They are in addition to the institutions already being used such as the University of Lagos and the Yaba College of Technology.
“Again, we are also considering some ICT-based corporate organisations such as Prime Innovation Institute of Technology on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Audax Solution, for the CBT examination.
“However, the proposed centres, especially the tertiary institutions, must have functional desktops, Computer System Cable and Local Area Network, with a minimum of 150 Systems and a minimum of five technical personnel at the centres.”
Oladeji said that the centres were also required to have, among other things, electricity backup such as generators and inverters.
According to him, some private schools in Lagos State have also indicated interest in hosting the examination.
Oladeji said that schools which met the requirements for the conduct of the CBT would have a lot to benefit from the arrangement.
He said the gadgets used for the examination would boost teaching and learning in the schools thereafter.
The coordinator urged candidates for this year’s examination to prepare themselves adequately, especially those opting for the CBT.
He noted that this year would be the last time candidates would be given the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) and the Dual-Based Test (DBT) as other options in the UTME.
“The CBT is the future and so candidates must try and apply themselves to the use of Information Communication Technology.”
He said that the CBT mode of the examination had ensured prompt delivery of scores, elimination of results blackout and reduction of examination malpractice to the barest minimum.
According to him, it has also helped in reducing cases of impersonation.
NAN reports that JAMB, which conducts the UTME, had introduced the CBT mode in 2013, but allowed candidates to opt to write the examination in any of the three modes. (NAN)

FG budgeted N21bn for stable electricity in 2014

By Michael EBOH
The Federal Government is to spend N20.6 billion to ensure steady supply of power across the country in 2014.
The amount contained in the 2014 Federal Government’s 2014 budget proposal is 7.87 per cent less than the N22.36 billion budgeted for the same purpose in the 2013 budget.
Major projects to be undertaken with the fund as proposed in the budget include the construction of a 215 mega watts Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO)/Gas power plant valued at N3.7 billion and a 10 mega watts wind farm worth N1 billion.
The Federal Government is also proposing an expenditure of N2.3 billion for the construction of small and medium hydro power plants; while N461 million is proposed for renewable energy for electricity generation.
The government also planned to spend N700 million and N1.8 billion to connect Gurara and Bayelsa, respectively to the national grid in 2014.
The FG budgeted N1.4 billion for the Electrifying Nigeria (Light Up Nigeria) project; N150 million for advocacy and awareness for successor companies and N1.7 billion to conduct feasibility studies for coal-fired plants at Enugu, Gombe, Benue and Kogi.
Other capital projects to be undertaken in 2014 are: consultancy service for detailed engineering design and project management/supervision valued at N300 million; N250 million was projected as take-off grant for the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPADEC, Act, while N300 million was set aside for Environment Impact Assessment and resettlement study for the 700 mega watt Zungeru Hydro-Electric Power project.
The National Load Demand study is to gulp N250 million; sustenance of power sector administrative support structure — N150 million, while N1.75 billion was set aside for the purchase of administrative buildings for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
Despite the ongoing reforms in the energy sector, which has led to the sale of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s successor companies among other far reaching initiatives, the Federal Government is to spend N136.99 billion on the energy sector — Power, Petroleum Resources and Mines and Steel Development — in 2014.
The amount represents 2.95 per cent of the total projected expenditure in the 2014 budget and is 7.79 per cent less than the N148.56 billion allocated to the sector in the 2013 budget.
This is irrespective of the fact that the Federal Government is anticipating a N7.16 trillion Gross Federally Collectible Oil and Gas Revenue in the budget, which represents 20.92 per cent of the projected Gross Federally Collectible Revenue of N10.88 trillion.
Specifically, the Federal Government is proposing an expenditure of N61.928 billion in Petroleum Resources sector in the 2014 budget; N62.45 billion for power and N12.607 billion for mines and steel development.
The allocation was broken down further into N3.4 billion recurrent and N59.05 billion capital expenditure for power; N55.71 billion recurrent and N6.22 billion capital expenditure for petroleum resources and N10.58 billion recurrent and N2.03 billion capital expenditure for mines and steel development.
In the Petroleum sector, the Federal Government is planning to spend N800 million on the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project; N162.678 million for surveillance and monitoring of environmental restoration programme and N150 million for the cleanup of oil and gas sediments.

Police to commence on an Impaired Body Of Missing three year-old Girl Found In Ilorin

File: Arrested ritualist with victim's head
File: Arrested ritualist with victim’s head
Residents of Ile Onigboro, Ita Elefun, Ita Ogunbo, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State were yesterday thrown into deep mourning at the gory sight of the mutilated body of a 3-year-old girl killed by suspected ritualists.
The bereaved family had earlier lost the immediate younger brother of the deceased to a strange illness about 10 months ago, making the death more pathetic.
The severed head of the victim was spotted at a refuse dump covered with a polythene bag while the remains of her badly mutilated body were deposited at a newly constructed soak-away pit, with most of her body parts and organs missing.
Also, a red piece of cloth with a syringe carefully wrapped inside was found close to the severed head, lending credence to the assumption that her abductors drugged her before carrying out the dastardly act.
Sympathisers were seen at the scene raining curses on the callous and heartless killers who had committed such heinous crime.
Mother of the deceased, Aminat Usman, while narrating the unfortunate event which happened on Tuesday wept profusely, describing the death as a rude shock, adding that the family had lost the immediate younger brother of Aliya, AbdulSamad to a strange illness about 10 months ago.
Amina said on that fateful day, when she woke up, she had hurriedly boiled rice for the family as Aliya didn’t eat dinner the previous day, adding that after she had eaten, she plaited her hair, after which she was dressed in one of her beautiful clothes.
“However, I never knew that I was preparing her for the final journey home,” she added.
The deceased’s mother, a petty trader at Adabata, who relocated to Ilorin with her husband on the prompting of their parents to fully care for the children, said she became suspicious when the father, Tajudeen Usman, a driver, who plies the Ilorin-Lagos route at Sawmill garage enquired after the deceased at 12p.m. on the said day.
“I told him that she should be with the other children at her grand-father’s place. When I didn’t see her at the time I expected, I became very suspicious because this was very unusual of her.
“But after frantic search for her yielded no fruit up till about 7p.m., I became very apprehensive. At that moment, I felt cold. It was the shout from the search team later the next morning, at 6a.m. that threw the neighbourhood into agony.”
Reports say investigations have been commenced by the police who vowed to try their best to fish out the culprits. [VN]

FG reach agreed to Repair of refineries-PENGASSAN

Lagos – The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) says it has received the commitment of the Federal Government to carry out Turn Around Maintenance of  refineries.
Mr Seyi Gambo, the National Public Relations Officer of the association, said this in an interview with journalists in Lagos on Wednesday.
“The resolve of the Federal Government to carryout actual maintenance of the refineries is commendable and we are watching the process,” he said.
Gambo said that there was no need to sell the refineries as scrap even if government decided that privatisation remained the best option.
“We are saying, as patriots, that there will be abject poverty in the land if the refineries are sold or privatised without using the right model.
“If you use the wrong model and the buyers now decide that it is only kerosene they want to refine what will you do?”
The PRO urged the government to address the security challenges in the sector, stressing that the country was losing billions of dollars due to crude oil theft and vandalism.
He said that PENGASSAN was unhappy that Nigeria, the 13th largest oil producing nation, was importing fuel for domestic consumption. (NAN)
